Android operating system updates deliver the latest security patches, system-level optimizations, and new user-interface features. Because manufacturers customize Android with their own skins (such as Samsung One UI, Xiaomi HyperOS, or stock Android on Google Pixel), menu names may vary slightly, but the overall update process is uniform across all devices.
Battery Level: Keep your device charged to at least 50%, or plug it into a charger.
Wi-Fi Connection: Connect to an unmetered Wi-Fi network; major OS version updates frequently exceed 1.5 GB to 3 GB in download size.
Internal Storage: Ensure you have at least 5 GB to 10 GB of free internal storage to download and extract the update package.
Open the Settings app on your Android phone or tablet.
Scroll down toward the bottom of the menu.
Select the update option according to your brand:
Google Pixel / Motorola / Sony: Tap System > System update (or Software update).
Samsung Galaxy: Tap Software update directly from the main Settings list.
Xiaomi / Redmi / POCO: Tap About phone > tap the OS version logo at the top.
OnePlus / OPPO / Realme: Tap About device > tap the OS card at the top.
Tap the Check for update or Download and install button.
Your device will query the manufacturer's server to verify whether an over-the-air (OTA) package is available for your specific model and carrier build.
Verification: If an update is available, the screen will display the release version, changelog, and package file size. If no update is ready, the screen will confirm that "Your system is up to date."
Tap Download and Install (or Restart to install if the package was pre-downloaded in the background).
Allow the device to finish downloading the update. Do not disconnect from Wi-Fi during this stage.
When prompted, tap Restart now.
The device will reboot into recovery mode to flash the firmware. A progress bar or the Android mascot will appear on screen.
Verification: Once the device boots back to the home screen, unlock it. A system notification will appear stating "System update completed successfully."
